Akshay shines but can’t soar like Suriya
Cast: Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, Radhikka Madan, Seema Biswas, Anil Charanjeet, Prakash Belawadi, R. Sarath Kumar ( special appearance)
Rating: 3*
Inspired by the book ‘Simply Fly- A Deccan Odyssey’ director Sudha Kongara remakes her own Tamil film Soorarai Pottru starring Suriya (2022) which released directly on OTT as Sarfira with Akshay Kumar. The director makes an inspiring story about the problems, sweat, and labour behind the making of low-cost air travel, which few people know. But the problem with Sarfira is that most of the people have already seen the original Tamil film on the OTT and hence despite being a good film there is hardly an audience in the theatre thus making another no-no show for Akshay Kumar. But the film has a lot of entertaining moments which keep the interest level high. The performances too are excellent with all the actors delivering brilliantly. Yes, certain scenes are over-the-top which were possibly added in this Hindi version.
Year: 1988
Village: Jarendeshwar, Maharashtra
Vir Mhatre (a superb Akshay) lives with his
mother (a wonderful Seema Biswas) on the outskirts of the village. His dream is
to make a low-cost airline. Rani (a confident and extremely good Radhikka Madan)
visits him for an arranged marriage. Vir tells her that 20 banks have rejected
his idea and have refused to give him loans. Rani says that she will only marry
him if he is successful in his venture. Vir tries to meet his idol Paresh
Goswami (an excellent Paresh Rawal whom you will love to hate) of Jaz Airlines
but to no effect. He spends all his earnings in buying a business class ticket
to travel/meet Paresh. He is humiliated after his proposal is rejected by
Paresh. Prakash Babu (a good Prakash Belawadi) of Fundflow Ventures who happens
to be on the same flight shows interest in Vir’s idea. But everything is not
what it seems for Vir and he gets a huge shock one day.
The climax is excellent but one cannot say the same about the romantic angle between Vir & Rani. Some other performances need to be mentioned- R. Sarath Kumar as Vir’s commanding officer Nendumaran is fantastic in a special appearance. As Mandar, Vir’s childhood friend Anil Charanjeet shines effectively. Don’t miss the end credits- Suriya makes a dashing cameo. Iravati Harshe Mayadev as Chitra from All India Radio is good.
A caution for Akshay- The film is possibly the best of the plethora of films that Akshay has done in the recent past. Sincerity shows in his work, but since he looks jaded and worn out he needs to take a break and come back refreshed and rejuvenated. Also, he should try not to do remakes as they have failed miserably.
