Not in the league of Ari Aster’s films

Cast: Maika Monroe, Alicia Witt, Blair Underwood, Kiernan Shipka & Nicolas Cage

Rating: 2.5*

The film is directed by Oz Perkins, son of Psycho actor Anthony Perkins. So the premise is disturbing and the also adds horror elements to the film. Nicolas Cage who is also the producer of this film plays the titular role of Longlegs with a Joker-like attitude with full prosthetic makeup. He is totally unrecognizable in the get-up.

A series of mysterious deaths is caused by a serial killer who goes by the name of Longlegs (Cage). To crack the case, the FBI assigns the socially misfit agent Lee Harker who needs to re-look at her traumatic past and study the same to nab the killer. One thing is for sure - both Longlegs & Parker have some past connections. Harker uncovers family secrets while pursuing the killer who leaves behind three cryptic letters at every crime scene that he has committed over the last three decades.

The film is not as fast-paced as thrillers should and moves at a slow pace but creates the desired atmosphere and lends an eerie feeling. Plus the film starts with a flat format and as the credits come to an end, becomes full screen.

The plot is twisted and psychological in nature and after a point, it stifles you, with the audience wanting a discovery and culmination from the tension it builds.

Maika Monroe as Lee Harker puts everything into the role which is challenging and mentally draining and she comes out trumps. Longlegs is possibly one of the strangest characters Cage has performed possibly after Ghost Rider.

The film is non-mainstream and for people who love slow-burn films.
